In the first act, Albrecht, Duke of Silesia, falls in love with Giselle, a beautiful and innocent villager. Thus, Albrecht pretends to be a villager named Loyd and courts her, while Hilarion, the ranger equally in love with Giselle, is suspicious of the deception; carried away by jealousy, he unmasks him. Then, Giselle’s innocence is broken by betrayal, falling into despair that leads her to madness and death.
In a dark forest, the Wilis, led by Queen Myrtha, trap men and force them to dance to their death. Hilarion tries to escape before midnight, while Albrecht, guilty for Giselle’s death, encounters her ghost. Hilarion falls victim to the Wilis, while Giselle’s spirit saves Albrecht by breaking Myrtha’s power.
